Rugby U18 V Bedford School
27th September 2017
Pitsford 1st XV rugby side opened their season at home yesterday, taking on Bedford School 4th XV. It was a glorious afternoon, with the pitch looking almost like a carpet, making for a good game of flowing rugby.
The game began with a high level of aggression and some fierce play from both sides. Bedford managed to maintain the better play in the opening period, constantly battering a firm resolute Pitsford defence and coming close to scoring on several occasions. Against the run of play Pitsford centre (Cai M) pounced on a loose ball and raced home from some 80 metres, with the Bedford back lined up in attacking mode (and caught somewhat off guard). Connor B converted, making the score 7-0.
Bedford again applied pressure and camped in the Pitsford 22 for the remainder of the half, but with either firm tackling or infringements, failed to take the final step. A rare Pitsford excursion to the Bedford half resulted in a penalty which Connor B pushed just wide on the stroke of half time. As the half finished, it was a very close affair with Pitsford still leading 7-0 against the run of play.
A motivated half time speech gave focus to the Pitsford side, with them playing somewhat inspired rugby in the second half. Both teams continued to press one another making for an entertaining and deadlocked game, at which point it looked like the result could have gone either way.
Some Pitsford pressure left Bedford to clear their lines, the clearance kick was confidently collected by Captain Connor B who switched play back towards the left wing. He fed it to Sam N who finally broke the Bedford tackles and sprinted to the line. Connor again collected the extra points, making it 14-0.
Bedford (in fine fighting spirit) weren’t ready to lie down and began to pick up good forward momentum through their rolling forward pack. Eventually they found themselves in attacking scrum, 5 metres out, which looked ominous for the Pitsford defence. As the 8 picked, a match saving tackle for Mairtin M meant again Pitsford were able to clear upfield.
The game was then broken open by the incisive line of running by Ben V coming off his wing and attacking the middle of the park. As he was met by tackles in midfield he neatly offloaded to Dillon H who was having an excellent game, who then offloaded to Cai M who sped in for his second.
This seemed to buoy the Pitsford team and sink the Bedford team. From kick off Pitsford were now executing some excellent inter-passing and fluency in their game which resulted in setting a way for Sam A down the left flank, with V on hand again to dive over for a try.
Last up, Sam N finished the scoring with his second try as Pitsford stretched a tired Bedford defence to take the final score to 29-0.
The score did not reflect the competitive nature and Bedford’s efforts during the game.
