Rugby U15 V Bedford Modern B XII

9th November 2017

The side flew out of the blocks and immediately started playing some outstanding Rugby. Robert C sped around one boy who wriggled his way to the line, touching down for Pitsford's first try of the afternoon. The conversion was expertly slotted from the touchline by Henry B (captured on video as well, much to his delight - check Twitter @Pitsford_PE to view). 7-0.

Pitsford again continued with flowing, forward moving Rugby and came rolling up field again and soon were 14-0 up (Henry B again faultless with the boot).

Bedford Modern seemed to awaken at this point and grabbed a score back, unconverted, 14-5.

Pitsford rung the changes and brought all guys into play and the year 9 additions in particular seemed to play even better than the previous week growing in confidence again. Joe O and Will K in particular impressed.

Bedford now playing down the hill managed to get a bit more momentum and rightly used some of their A team players after a couple of injuries in their team, making for a cracking and very even game, one which Pitsford kept finding the answers for. The Bedford pressure also forced Pitsford to clear their lines when under pressure which Lewis G who was having another fine game did expertly, except on one occasion where George C left myself completely dumfounded as he emerged with the ball near the Pitsford line and put in a scintillating tornado of a spiral kick some 60 metres downfield to my astonishment. George was now piecing together his best ever performance in a Pitsford shirt with much unseen work completed at the break down and a real engine to move him around the field.

Bedford pressure eventually told and they edged in front in what was now to start a see saw in scoring as they went ahead 17-14.

Pitsford quick to answer back, broke for another try. Touching down, again Henry adding to the extras. 21-17.

Bedford again after some excellent defence from Pitsford crossed for a 24-21 lead with just over 15 minutes to play.

Two quickly successive illegal tackles saw Matt L disappear to the sin bin, a slight mark on what was another exceptional performance for him with his support play showing an exceptional talent of his.

Again Pitsford showed tremendous spirit and fight answering back again, this time through Captain Tyler S who made an outstanding break and had the pace to finish from 50m out, taking the score to 28-24 with just 7 minutes remaining on the clock and 2 of those to be completed with Matt L, anxiously waiting and bouncing on the side line to get back involved. Henry B here completed a 100% day with the boot.

Bedford now pushed for the Pitsford line and the side managed to repel them on several occasions. Pitsford were now unlike the rest of the game conceding several penalties right at the death as Bedford would come again and again pounding the Pitsford defence to try and grab the win.

A dangerous scrum saw Henry B now playing like a man possessed flatten his opposite number with the back row ready to scoop up the ball, they were deemed to have done so illegally. As the skipper was talking to the referee and raced in to score for a 29-28 win.

The side were devastated but can take so much from the game on the whole, using their whole side against a Bedford side which improved throughout as did the Pitsford performance.

Tyler was excellent throughout, with carries and try saving tackles flying in everywhere (again captured on video - see Twitter @Pitsford_PE) and most importantly some brilliant leadership skills. Robert C who had looked dangerous and tackled immensely throughout had also put his hat in the ring for the Man of the Match award. We couldn't look past the unseen work though of George C who as mentioned played his best game to date in a Pitsford shirt.

Final score Bedford Modern 29 Pitsford 28.

Man of the Match: George C
