Rugby U13 V Maidwell Hall

4th October 2017

The U13’s made a short trip to Maidwell Hall to take on the prep school for the very first time. A 25 man strong squad was to be used in this developmental game. Pitsford varied their line-up, using various combinations to successful outcomes.

The game was split into three 17 minute thirds, allowing both teams to coach their players through the game. Most impressive from the Pitsford side were that the defensive attributes (namely the tackling skills), which were top draw in all three thirds. A particular mention must go to Praveen V, Kieran R and Oliver C, all of whom were leading the charge on this front.

Pitsford finished the first third 15-5 down with some well taken tries from Maidwell. An excellent phase of play saw Oliver T cross for his third try in two weeks. Unfortunately, Oliver aggravated an existing injury in the act of scoring which was his halt to the day. Otherwise Pitsford may have pushed towards a more level score.

In the penultimate third, Pitsford began to mount scrum pressure but lacked some of the fluency they had played with in the first third, making them unable to move the ball effectively. The end results - a further 10 points scored by Maidwell who were now playing some nice rugby.

The final third provided a much more physical and inspired performance from Pitsford, with Jon S diving over for a rare try for the hooker. Pitsford though were not playing with the same quality or style that they had previously demonstrated in prior games. Instead, they reverted to a very direct method of rugby and spurned several opportunities. Eventually they managed to barrel over again, with Charlie J emerging as the scorer.

The brief introduction of Elliott P saw him quickly accumulate two personal tries and draw Pitsford level at 25 all. Both sides then pushed for a victory, making for a nervous finish, but it ended 25-5, an enjoyable afternoon of rugby for those involved.

Pitsford demonstrated some good character to push back for the draw and the game also allowed plenty of players to grow further in confidence.

Man of the Match - This week we couldn’t possibly pick between Kieran R, Praveen V and Oliver C. So the award is shared between all three. Well done to all.
